Addressing the social-emotional needs and mental health of our students is a top priority at Owensboro High School. During the week of September 8, our school counselors, student assistance coordinator, and youth service center staff will provide every OHS student with important information and resources on suicide prevention. Following these presentations, students will also have the opportunity to meet individually with a counselor if they request additional support.
OHS will be using the evidence-based Signs of Suicide (SOS) program, which helps students:
Understand that depression is treatable
Learn to recognize depression and suicide risk factors
Practice the ACT strategy: Acknowledge, Care, Tell a trusted adult
Identify who at school they can go to for help when needed
This program ensures OHS meets the Kentucky state requirement that all middle and high school students receive annual suicide prevention awareness by September 15.
We encourage families to learn more about this program and how to support students at home. For additional information from our OPS District Counseling Director, please click on this link and review the SOS for Parents Infographic to see how you can ACT.
📞 Remember: The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988.
Together, we can ensure every Red Devil feels supported, valued, and never alone.
