Student pointing at communication board

Owensboro Public schools is proud to partner with RiverValley Behavioral Health to bring Playground Communication boards to all five OPS elementary schools and Hager preschool.  At OPS we believe that every student deserves to be heard and included.  The communication boards are one tool that promotes a more inclusive learning environment.

Playground Communication Boards are visual tools designed to help all students—especially those with limited verbal communication skills—interact and play more independently and inclusively on the playground. Playground communication boards promote inclusive communication for students with speech delays, autism, or other communication needs.  They allow nonverbal or minimally verbal students to express themselves with peers.

Communication boards support language development for all students by pairing visual symbols with spoken words while encouraging social interaction and reducing frustration.

It is our pleasure to also share that through the generosity of River Valley Behavioral Health, our community playgrounds will add communication boards to eleven playgrounds in the City of Owensboro.  We are proud to partner with the City of Owensboro to ensure all playground facilities are accessible and inclusive to the citizens of Owensboro.
