The BHC (Build His/Her CROWN) program at Owensboro Middle School, led by Marshall and Allyson Sanders, is proud to announce the launch of its final pillar, Neighborly, a community-focused initiative centered on service, collaboration, and compassion.

As part of this culminating pillar, students are actively learning about local nonprofits and discovering meaningful ways to support and uplift organizations that serve the Owensboro community. In response to recent concerns surrounding youth violence, students in the BHC program are taking a proactive stance, demonstrating that young people are not defined by negative narratives but by their ability to lead, care, and create impact.

Throughout the entire month of April, BHC students will spearhead a donation drive to benefit local shelters. The initiative will focus on collecting essential items, including nonperishable food, socks, and hygiene products. Donations will be distributed among multiple community agencies to maximize impact and reach.

Student ambassadors are already stepping forward with powerful messages about the importance of giving back:

“A lot of people who are in this situation never knew this would happen to them. A wise man once told me what goes around comes back around,” said Student Ambassador Braela.

“Don’t be a zero—help and be the hero,” shared Student Ambassador Lydia.

Student Ambassador Dia’Ryan added, “The more you help others, the more you get back,” emphasizing that the group believes this initiative will help the community see youth in a more positive light.

More details about the initiative will be shared on March 30th during a special panel session at Owensboro Middle School. This event will feature local nonprofit representatives engaging with the entire student body. Following the session, students will officially invite their peers and the broader community to begin contributing donations through the end of April.

Community members, organizations, and partners interested in supporting this student-led effort are encouraged to get involved.
