Gendek Named Teacher Leader for Holocaust Education Initiative

A new initiative led by the Interdisciplinary Program in Jewish Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky features a collaboration with educators from across the Commonwealth to enhance K-12 Holocaust education and provide professional learning and teaching tools necessary to meet the requirements of the 2018 Ann Klein and Fred Gross Holocaust Education Act.

Funded by a grant from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence (JHFE), the UK Holocaust Education Initiative will create a network of teachers across the Commonwealth who feel confident and capable of including Holocaust curricula in their classrooms. The initiative will create opportunities for interdisciplinary content sharing, pedagogical training, and collaborative planning.

From a pool of highly qualified applicants and through an extremely competitive process, the steering committee chose 20 teachers to lead this initiative:

Teachers will work with UK Faculty in Jewish Studies, the College of Education, and other content experts during the summer and the 2022-23 academic year to

  • Deepen understanding of the Holocaust and related genocide studies
  • Collaborate to design school and district-specific lessons
  • Plan and execute Holocaust education workshops for up to 250 teachers across Kentucky
  • Become content leaders in schools and districts

Instructional materials created by Kentucky teachers through the UK Holocaust Initiative will be professionally peer-reviewed and then shared freely on the Initiative’s website.

“UK faculty will use their expert knowledge to empower Kentucky teachers with extensive middle and high school classroom experience and expertise by educating and collaborating with them and their peers. Through these multiple layers of collaborative work, we will create networks of experts at the local level and a sustainable model for educational excellence,” Project Co-Director Janice Fernheimer explains.

A steering committee of experts from the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, Fayette County Public Schools, and two Louisville educators will guide the grant's implementation. UK’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning collaborates on program design, pedagogical framing, and the development of instructional materials. 

OPS Night at the Dustbowl

The Annual Owensboro Dust Bowl is once again upon us and Owensboro Public Schools is once again hosting OPS Night at the Dust Bowl.

Join administrators and staff from all across the district July 23 from 5-8 p.m. at the Dust Bowl. You can meet teachers and staff, get assistance with Online Registration for the 2022-23 school year and have the opportunity to receive giveaways such as backpacks and school supplies.

Stuff the Bus 2022 Friday, July 29 1-5 p.m.

Owensboro Public Schools and Daviess County Public Schools will be hosting the annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive Friday, July 29 from 1-5 p.m. at both Owensboro Walmart locations.

Both districts are asking the community to donate school supplies that will be used to ensure families in need have everything they need to start the school year off successfully. Any reserve supplies that are left over will be used to support students throughout the year in the event they need to restock items for their schoolwork.

Items requested are as follows:

Eraser tops for pencils Three-prong folders
Pens (red, blue or black) Solid color folders
24-pack Crayons Three-ring binders
Crayola Markers Loose Leaf Paper (college and wide ruled)
Crayola Colored Markers Pencil Pouches

Items can be donated to either location and the supplies will be split evenly between the two districts and donated to their Family Resource Centers for distribution. Monetary donations are also appreciated and can be donated on-site or to either district's Central Office.

Strategic Plan

The Owensboro Public Schools Board of Education approved the district plan that will help guide decision making for the next five years.

The plan was constructed over the past year with assistance from Studer as well as gathering information and data from stakeholders. The steering committee spent months organizing data and putting together a plan that meets the needs of our students with support from families, staff and the community.

The two documents of the strategic plan outline the district's goals for the next five years and how leadership intends to measure the success of those goals.

Summer Food Service Site information

The Owensboro Public Schools Summer Food Service Program dates, times and locations have been announced for the summer of 2022.

Families need to be aware that the district will be returning to the pre-COVID guidelines for the summer feeding program as many of the waivers that allowed for rule changes during the pandemic have expired.

As a result, all meals must be consumed on-site and will only be provided to individuals aged 18 and under. You do not have to be a student at Owensboro Public Schools to receive a free meal. They are available to anyone aged 18 and under. 

There will be no meal service May 30, June 20 or July 4.
