Butterflies

  • Children's Butterfly Site - a web site by the National Biological Information Infrastructure that looks at the life cycle of butterflies and moths, answers frequently asked questions about butterflies and moths, lists references to butterfly and moth books and videos, and provides photos of butterflies in Asia, Western Europe, North America, and Central America.

Dinosaurs

  • Dinosaurs - another Smithsonian Institute web site that helps students answer questions about dinosaurs: What makes a dinosaur "a dinosaur"? Where did they live? What caused their mass extinction? Students can participate in a virtual dinosaur discovery

DNA

  • Putting DNA to Work - this National Academy of Sciences web site looks at where DNA is found, similarities in the DNA of humans and other species, and how traits are inherited from one generation to the next. Learn how DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), discovered 50 years ago, is used today to detect diseases, improve crops, and catch criminals.

Earth Science

  • Digital Library for Earth System Education - a National Science Foundation web site that is a geoscience community resource that supports teaching and learning about the Earth system. Find thousands of reviewed resources on topics that include atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, climatology, cryology, ecology, environmental science, forestry, geography, geology, mineralogy and petrology, hydrology, mathematics, natural hazards, ocean sciences, physics, soil science, and space science.
  • Eyes on the Sky and Feet on the Ground - a Smithsonian Institution web site that provides hundreds of hands-on astronomy explorations for Grades 2-6. Topics include earth's rotation and orbit, earth's tilt, shadows, seasons, time zones, the moon, calendars, maps, the solar system, and tides. Activities help students understand the scientific process.

Jeopardy Games

  • Hardin County Jeopardy Games - Jeopardy-like games on different topics and different grade levels.  Click on the link of the game you want to try and choose Open.

Oceanography

  • NASA Oceanography - this web site provides online field trips, information about ocean phenomena (such as phytoplankton, carbon, and reefs), remote sensing tools for monitoring ocean changes, and more.
  • Kid's & Teacher's Corner - a NOAA web site offering information about oceanography, meteorology, resource conservation, and marine biology.

Science

  • GetSmarter - Take a science test and compare your grade against students worldwide. Once you know your grade, you can use learning tools on the site to help you "get smarter."

Solar System

  • Astro-Venture - this NASA web site gives students an opportunity to Design a Planet, and in doing so they will learn what makes Earth special for humans
  • NASA Kids' Club - click on Level 5 and choose "Go to the Head of the Solar System" to answer game questions about our solar system
  • Our Solar System - links to video clips and test on the solar system.  (Teachers can download a PowerPoint file and CPS file to use)
  • The Planets Adventure - click on The Planets Adventure link at this Toon University web site for students to learn interest facts about our solar system.
  • Solar System Game - click on this NASA link and have students place the planets in proper order around the sun.
  • Space Watch - this Yahooligans Game tests the student's knowledge of the solar system.

Space Science

  • Amazing Space - this Space Telescope Science Institute web site has information about telescopes, comets, galaxies, and other space science topics.  All lessons include spectacular photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and many high quality graphics, videos, and animation designed to enhance student understanding and interest.
  • Ask an Astronomer for Kids - this Cal Tech web site provides answers and photos for 200 common questions about astronomy and objects in space. Topics include planets, stars, the solar system, comets, asteroids, galaxies, and the night sky.
  • Astronomy Center - this National Science Foundation web site is a collection of Astronomy 101 reviewed digital resources for teachers and students. Topics include asteroids and comets, astrobiology, big bang theory, black holes and pulsars, cosmology, dark energy, dark matter, galaxies, historical astronomy, Milky Way, planetary astronomy, planetary geology, stellar astronomy, telescopes and satellites, terrestrial planets, planet formation, planetary atmospheres, space exploration, stars, and the sun.

Weather

  • Weather Activities - use the EdHeads web site to show students how to predict the weather (also incorporates math activities).
  • What's the Weather? - dress a bear in appropriate clothing related to the temperature shown on a thermometer.  Go to the page and click on "What's the Weather?" picture on the left side of the page.
