Overview of OPS Fine Arts Programs

Owensboro Public Schools is committed to providing every student access to a quality arts program. With first-class faculty, caring administrative support, and talented students now housed in state-of-the-art facilities, we are poised to build a bright future for every child. As part of the outstanding success of Owensboro Public Schools, we see the arts as a vital part of the school environment. Our visionary superintendent and school board are committed to quality arts programs in our schools.

We have recently expanded our dance program to include Introduction to Dance at Owensboro High School and will be adding Advanced Dance in 2011-12. Our Drama department is adding a component of the Community Campus Initiative and creating a full-time drama position at Owensboro Middle School. The Choral Department celebrates two students achieving Governor’s School of the Arts this summer and their second performance at State Choral Festival. The OPS Band program celebrates the 8th Grade Band performance at the University of Kentucky, hosted a KMEA Quarterfinal event, and is enjoying immense growth throughout our program. The Orchestra program has initiated a new private lesson program at OMS and welcomes the wonderful students in the Newton-Parrish strings program. Our visual arts held its first-ever juried art show this spring to rave reviews at the RiverPark Center. For 2011-12 we are piloting an arts infusion program in the elementary schools to complement our classroom instruction. Partnering with 21st-Century programs, we have added a steel-pan band at Cravens Elementary and an elementary drum line at Foust Elementary.

Check the calendar and attend one of the arts performances in our newly renovated auditorium or black box theatre at Owensboro High School. All performances are free or available at a nominal charge. You will see talented students in all arts given the chance to succeed through performance. Enjoy!
